Alexander R. Taylor | Visual Artist
Alexander Robert Taylor works primarily with acrylic paints/markers, colored pencils, ink pens, and markers. He is currently experimenting with installation works and acrylic gouache paints. His artwork amalgamates the past & present. He thinks of his art as an anachronism & atavism, i.e., a subversive approach to standardization, but walking a fine line between figurative and stylized works of art.
Alexander first received artist training at home during his childhood, from his father, who was a remarkable illustrator. Throughout primary and secondary school, Alexander was enrolled in every art class available. In his early 20s, he was accepted as a student at The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, 60603. His training encompasses both formal and self-taught disciplines.
The art he creates falls within the Modern Era, subversive and figurative. He often finds himself fighting against extreme destinations within Contemporary Art to steal back his innate voice. This leaves him with an isolated disposition, i.e., a feeling that his art doesn’t belong. “There has to be a rule even if it's a bad one because the evidence of art’s power is in breaking down barriers.” Pablo Picasso. He finds himself to be the “rule” fighting against these extremes, to go backwards, and bring back the disegno in art.
Artist’s Statement(s):
“When I was younger, I always loved creating art. The pursuit of acceptance and money lured me away from it. I rediscovered my love for art a few years ago, remembering how much I enjoyed making it. What “drew” me to art as a kid was my father; his art was unique and distinctive. My absence from art is a source of cognitive dissonance, reminding me how essential it is to be true to oneself. Being part of an artist community, showing my work, and viewing other artists' work are important to me. My goal is to grow and learn more about the art world and other artists, as now that I've reconnected with my first love, I am an artist.” A.R. Taylor, 2023
Alexander is an autistic egalitarian who lives in Omaha, NE, USA. He is currently working on installation art, figurative stylized paintings, and illustrated books. He manages Bipolar 1 Disorder with medication and the support of a clinical psychologist, therapist, and primary physician. True success, for him, is to remain an artist.
